Description

Some wooden bowls are made from timber that may be a little plain. Others are made from timber that has ‘features’. This is a very good example. Sycamore is normally white, with little in the way of prominent grain or figure. It can spalt, with fungus causing colours that may be spectacular. The log from which I made this bowl is not only spalted, it has been heavily attacked by wood boring insects. It is full of bore holes that are about 5 mm across and go right through the walls. Some people would reject such timber, but I think the holes add a lot to the bowl. They show its history. But this bowl would not be a good choice for salad or soup!

The timber came from Stephens Gardens in Finchley.
