Spalted sycamore bowl, 21 cm

This bowl is one of a series that I turned from the wood of a large sycamore tree. The base of the trunk was affected by fungus, that caused a lot of spalting. This bowl came from higher up the trunk, where the fungus created wandering single and double black lines. The timber also has ripple figure, which is formed where the wood is compressed by the weight of large branches joining the trunk. This bowl has a prominent streak of grey near the rim, another product of the spalting fungus. Variations in hardness of the wood have given the bowl a slightly uneven surface.
