This bowl is made of spalted holly wood and is 17 cm across. Holly is usually a white timber, but spalting has given this piece a darker colour, with dark lines and lighter patches. Parts remind me of a butterfly’s wing. In places the wood is somewhat degraded by the fungus and I was in two minds about completing the bowl. I’m glad I did. There are small patches where the spalted parts are soft, and there are some cracks, including two open fissures at the rim. This is not a bowl for hard use, but could hold fruit or other dry food.
