This bowl is made of beechwood from a large tree that came down in a storm. The tree was about 80 feet tall and grew in a private garden in Mill Hill in North London. The bottom of the trunk was spalted, a fungus attack that colours the wood, but this piece came from higher up the tree. The wood here has patches of slightly darker colour, but the spalting is not advanced. Sometimes spalting can look a bit too much, but the wood of this bowl is sound and has a more subtle, cloudy appearance. It could be used for fruit or salad.
