This bowl is made of beechwood from a large tree that came down in a storm. The tree was about 80 feet tall and grew in a private garden in Mill Hill in North London. Most of the timber was sound, but the bottom of the trunk was spalted, a fungus attack that colours the wood and can make meandering black lines, sometimes in parallel pairs as in this case. The bowl also has some much finer single black lines. It would make an interesting and unusual fruit bowl.
