Description
I turned this shallow bowl from the wood of a big old oak that fell in a gale. Every piece of wood has a story to tell, this one more than most. Its black colour is due to iron, which, over time, reacts with the tannin in the wood to make a black stain. This used to be how writing ink was made. The iron entered the wood when someone hammered in nails. The hole left by one of the nails is still in this bowl. It started a crack, which is now stable. Nails make the turning interesting! There are some other small natural fissures. The bowl is quite chunky, and has some weight to it.
