Description
This bowl is one of a series that I turned from the wood of a big oak that fell in a gale. Starting with the fresh, unseasoned timber, I roughed out the bowl then put it aside to dry, a process that takes months. The wood changed shape as it dried, resulting in a warped and distorted bowl. The bowl then went back on the lathe for trueing up and final turning. I left the rim of this one unfinished. It still retains the distortion, with marks left by the chainsaw and the initial turning.
The rest of the bowl, though, is fully finished to a smooth surface that contrasts with the rim. The log had a lot of burr figure, with small fissures, that are present in this bowl. There are a couple of larger knots too. A striking and unusual piece.
