Description

This small green-turned oak bowl is one of a series I made from a single tree, a big fallen oak that had been left lying on the ground. I turned this bowl with thin walls while the timber was still unseasoned. Drying had begun, because the tree had been down for some time before I found it. Normally the heartwood of oak is darker in colour than the sapwood. But this wood has a rich brown sapwood and the heartwood is pale. I think this is due to fungal staining.

Over a few days, the bowl dried, warped and then stabilised. Its diameter varies from 16 cm to 18 cm.

It has an organic look and feel, distorted and with a slightly undulating rim and a textured surface. It has a small bark inclusion and hole near the rim.
