Green turned oak bowl, 15 cm

Description

This bowl is one of a series that I turned from the wood of a big garden tree. Such trees often have nails driven into them over the years. The tree grows over the nails, enclosing them in the wood. Oak contains a lot of tannin, which reacts with the iron, making black stains that extend up the tree and are visible in this bowl. This iron/tannin reaction was in past times used to make ink. I turned the bowl before the wood dried. As it dried later, it warped a little, though less than often happens. It developed a leathery texture.
