This bowl is 25 cm across its greatest diameter. It is one of a series I made from a big old oak tree that fell and lay on the ground for long enough to begin to spalt. Its sapwood has darkened due to the action of the spalting fungus, with paler heartwood. I turned it while the wood was still wet with sap. Within a week or so, the bowl had dried and distorted to the irregular oval shape that you can see, then stabilised. I retained the natural textured surface of the log that was beneath the bark. It has an attractive organic look and feel, with some ripple figure, and could be used for fruit. It has a small bark inclusion that makes it unsuitable for salad.
