This bowl was made from unseasoned ash wood and has taken on a distorted shape and textured surface as it dried. During the turning process I found that the blank included a large and very prominent decayed knot. The knot has holes through it, and an uneven surface. On the outside a layer of sound wood has partly grown over the decayed section. This is a striking bowl, though some people might think that it should have been scrapped!
It could be used for fruit. The knot is not strong, and care will be needed to prevent damage. But a hole will increase ventilation, which might be good for the fruit!
