Bowl made from pollard plane, 18 cm

No doubt you have seen plane trees on the street. You may have seen them after they have been pollarded, or pruned hard. They are left with a few ugly, lumpy stumps of branches, a mere skeleton. New branches soon grow from the stumps, of course. As a turner, I have sometimes wondered what the stumps are like inside after repeated pollarding. This bowl shows the answer. Some decay, bark inclusions, the ends of the smaller branches that were cut off, knots, fissures, rich colour and twisted grain. This is not a bowl for putting your breakfast in, but is a very striking piece, full of character that reveals its history. It could be used for fruit.
